Upcoming and Ongoing (in STL)

Full disclosure: I used one of those kids mumbling that “there’s nothing to do in this town”. I am proud I can now be counted among the cheerleaders of this city and give dirty looks to its detractors. In the short span of time I’ve been writing this blog, I have collected a list of things to do long enough that I cannot attend so much as half of the events I recommend, much less write about them. As a result I have collected a backlog of Upcoming events in the calendar, which I am now compelled to list in a digest format to make sure you know about them too. Each of them still warrant a post of their own, but this will have to suffice. So if you find the time to make it out this weekend, here’s some cool shit to do:
- It’s Fashion Week in St. Louis! Finally St. Louis gets the credit it deserves for it’s achievements downtown. When we’re not busy poking fun at local publications, we’ll actually give them props for making things happen. There are a ton of shows (read: after parties) yet to take place, and some interesting multimedia (*cough*mayor slay interview*cough*) pieces+blog action. Really though, we were going to write about this show before it sold out.
- The Ditty Bops (and Maid Rite) play Mad Art Gallery on Thursday August 25th @ 7 and 10 pm. They’ll be “Takin’ it fast takin it slow, Don’t take it at all just get up and go, Come on let’s go” and possibly wearing vegetable bikinis while playing their vaudeville-style bluegrass tunes. It’s only their second time playing Saint Louis, but we’re sure you’ll give them reason to come back while they give you a reason to pay; a portion of your ticket price will go towards Farm Aid. Also, they have a tour blog.
- We’re making time between work this Saturday afternoon for the Festival of Nations, and the Moonlight Ramble on Saturday night. The Moonlight Ramble now on it’s upteenth year of bicycle reclamation of our city’s streets shouldn’t need an introduction, so here’s a little more information. We’re glad that the celebrated second annual Festival of Nations will also take place this Sunday afternoon, after our coffee break.
And did we mention our party this Friday evening, August 24th? Oh yeah, we posted about that already. Well since “nothing is going on around here these days”, we’re sure you’ll drop by. Or at least for the after-party.

Although I wouldn’t want to detract from the groundbreaking work of Highway 61 contributor/resident frozen desert theoretician Gabe Bullard, I must ask: “Does anyone want coffee with their dessert?” While we have you over for Sunday dinner tonight, we thought we share some more appetizers and pass some links your way. In other words, here’s some more links with your coffee.
- Sure, we’ve been talking about tasty city water in our coffee_links for months now, but what about the water in your bottle? Now in the last week we’ve learned that Aquafina is basically the same drink, confirming what we already knew.
- Further congesting our blogroll this past week - “It Is what It Is” (aka f0xyr0xy) blog is now CourtneyWatson.net, we laughed along with STL Rising, and waited for an update to STLFlimWire.
- We weren’t alone in updating our blogroll either - Commonspace introduced us to the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra blog, and 52nd City shone light unto mp3 blog YourStandardLife.com .
- You might be interested in learning about the unique blues music history of our namesake. That had us updating our About page while singing the St. Louis Blues once again for Bessie.

We love sharing some of our favorite links with you so much we couldn’t wait for it earlier this week. But while these links would have to wait, let that not detract from great work from some of our favorite local blogs. For those of you taking a lazy sunday, here’s some links with your coffee when you wake up in the late afternoon.
- Seems like everyone is playing blog games these days. PubDef.net challenged us fill in the caption between Mayors Bloomberg and Slay, and Dividing by Zero keeps giving us a monday mystery mix/podcast that keeps us guessing the tracklisting.
- Imagine St. Louis without the Arch. BrickCity helps us visualize this idea, which raises more questions about how we use public space. As they say, “if your town doesn’t have one, it sucks to be you”.
- KDHX finally redesigned their website, but they could use your help.

52nd City Events
Wednesday, July 25th, 2007Due to some domain issues, our friends over at 52nd City are unable to get the word out about two of their upcoming events. It’s time now for Highway 61 to do its civic duty.

This afternoon will mark the release of our fifth print issue, along with our previous effort, the CD “Sound.” The new mag features a variety of St. Louis writers, illustrators and photographers musing on the topic of “Sporty” and will be on sale for $8, with all previous issues available, as well. Expect a few sporting events to be held in-and-out of Riley’s on Saturday. Owner Bill Kapes is generously offering some free food and drink… while supplies last. Our new web issue will also go live on this day.
Chippewa Chapel BBQ Benefit

The hosts of the Chippewa Chapel and Off Broadway have generously offered to host a BBQ benefit for 52nd City. Bring a few dollars for BBQ and your guitar: enjoy a bite, then sign up for the Chippewa Chapel’s open mic, the most-popular open mic and jam in South City. The open mic ordinarily kicks off at 9 p.m., but we’ll have music on the gorgeous Off Broadway stage beginning at 8 p.m. this evening. Some 52nd City giveaways will be peppered through the evening.

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007We think we owe you a drink, so instead of the coffee we usually serve ya on Sunday, we thought we’d mix it up a little. Tonight we’re serving up a martini special, in varieties of vodka, gin, and link based flavor.
- We were really sad to see the kids over @ Urban Studio “Adventure in Media” class end. Their blog offered a glimpse of the future of new media, and we half expected them to start replacing us by posting their media projects at the end of class.
- Speaking of what’s news in Old North, we’re sure you’ve already heard the big news about Blairmont. Not that we wouldn’t like $100 million put towards redevelopment (just ask poor Michael Allen), but we think it’s disingenuous for people to call it a waste of money. Last time we checked, St. Louis has a massive development sitting on a known floodplain.
- It’s good to know the Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center’s website is back. It’s also good to know Black Bear Bakery has a website. Just saying….
- Pssst…actual coffee links
- We would’ve been suprised that the Iron Barely has been named “best (american) homestyle comfort food” in St. Louis, but we think it’s one of town’s best kept secrets. And while we heard about it from friends, we’d like to thank the readers of Sauce Magazine for letting the cat out of the bag.
