Links with Your Martini Monday - 8/6

Monday, August 6th, 2007

Better late than never, althoguh a little shorter, here’s our weekly short digest of the local interwebnet shakedown in convenient hyperlinked format.

  • We were shocked when our friend joined stlpunk.com, but more so that it still existed.  Not to be out-posted, these genre based sites might also peek your keen curiosity: StLouisRaver.com and STLBlues.net.  We’re pretty sure there ought to be a Ska site as well, at least in preparation for the Reel Big Fish/Less Than Jake show coming up.
  • Speaking of social music and upcoming events, there is a little meetup planned this Friday for members of the Circuit/friends of the newly redesigned, and suspiciously similar LoFISTL.com :P  We mention this because we’re still disappointed we couldn’t make the Pandora meetup.
  • Although we heard about this audition in person, STLauditions.com seems to have the lowdown on theater and film work.  And despite it’s bad rep for bulk updates (see also: this site), it’s probably the best resource in town short of a positive Dennis Brown review…
  • I missed my update because I was out of town, but I also missed Lollapalooza while I was in the same town.  Fortunately, PlaybackSTL.com wants to redeem itself with Play:stl , a music festival of its own.  And if they can pull off three days, they might actually gain their credibility back :P .

Chances are we read your article last week, but if it didn’t get mentioned here why not leave a comment?  That should help us save a seat for you at the table next Sunday - btw do you take your coffee with links?

Links with Your Coffee - 7/29

Sunday, July 29th, 2007

We love sharing some of our favorite links with you so much we couldn’t wait for it earlier this week.  But while these links would have to wait, let that not detract from great work from some of our favorite local blogs.  For those of you taking a lazy sunday, here’s some links with your coffee when you wake up in the late afternoon.

STL Comic-Con (sort of…)

Friday, July 27th, 2007

image of a previous comic show, provided c/o stlcomics.comJust because you couldn’t get a date to Nerd Prom this weekend doesn’t mean you have to get stood up.  St. Louis is having it’s own comic convention of sorts, albeit a little more comic centric.

The Spector Club Comic Show, now in its 30th year of operation, has it’s next show this Sunday, July 29th from 10:00am-2:30pm at the American Legion Post #111 in Shrewsberry.  There you’ll find sci-fi collectible, toys, and of course a large selection of collectible comic books to buy/sell/trade.  To say nothing of all the new friends you’re sure to make who won’t look at you funny when you’re making a joke about the Tick.

And while it may have slipped under our radar in the past, this ongoing show series has more dates coming up, which can be found on the STLcomics.com blog .  More info on the event can be found on the Upcoming event page for the show as well as in the Highway 61 Upcoming group.

52nd City Events

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

Due to some domain issues, our friends over at 52nd City are unable to get the word out about two of their upcoming events. It’s time now for Highway 61 to do its civic duty.

Go to these events:

52nd City “Sporty” Release Party
Where: Riley’s, 3458 Arsenal, 314-664-7474
When: Saturday, July 28, 3-6 p.m.
No cover, free food and drinks, all ages

This afternoon will mark the release of our fifth print issue, along with our previous effort, the CD “Sound.” The new mag features a variety of St. Louis writers, illustrators and photographers musing on the topic of “Sporty” and will be on sale for $8, with all previous issues available, as well. Expect a few sporting events to be held in-and-out of Riley’s on Saturday. Owner Bill Kapes is generously offering some free food and drink… while supplies last. Our new web issue will also go live on this day.

Chippewa Chapel BBQ Benefit
Where: Off Broadway, 3509 Lemp, 314-773-3363
When: Thursday, August 2, 8-10 p.m.
No cover, BBQ for sale, 21-up after 10 p.m.

The hosts of the Chippewa Chapel and Off Broadway have generously offered to host a BBQ benefit for 52nd City. Bring a few dollars for BBQ and your guitar: enjoy a bite, then sign up for the Chippewa Chapel’s open mic, the most-popular open mic and jam in South City. The open mic ordinarily kicks off at 9 p.m., but we’ll have music on the gorgeous Off Broadway stage beginning at 8 p.m. this evening. Some 52nd City giveaways will be peppered through the evening.

Spliced with Circuitry

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Sure, we’ve already talked a little about “The Circuit” (aka LoFiSTL.com’s socnet); everyone is talking about The Circuit.  What you might not know is that we’re really excited about some of the periphery features of The Circuit.  Although it is really exciting to have a bunch of familiar faces on a local social network that isn’t the usually socnet hiding spots, what most interests me are the ways it can tie together the next generation local interwebnet (which, i’ll assume interests you, if only because you are here).

You’ve probably already noticed the standard faire of web integration Highway61 uses, but that list is expanding.  For instance, you can follow our continually expanding list of coffee links on del.icio.us between breaks.  To say nothing of blog logs, we’ll do our best to give you the heads up on what’s Upcoming.  Usually we just keep these things on our sidebar (look now, we’ll wait), but we’ll do our best to to keep you posted (heh).

Links with Your Coffee - 7/16

Monday, July 16th, 2007

P coffeeWhile summer vacation beckons for me, there is yet a week’s worth of material I must digest for the civic minded folk of St. Louis.  This weekly feature, which will indeed catch up with it’s original Sunday morning regularity (eventually), should perk up your ordinarily haphazard repertoire of websites.

Saturday Cartoon

Saturday, July 7th, 2007

Resume adult swim!  Although I don’t really keep a Saturday morning ritual like I did when I was just a youngin’, I found myself watching cartoons this morning.  Star Clipper’s blog got me started, with a post about The Simpsons movie site.  And while I won’t join the arguement over which season was the last good one, I will thank them for for tipping me off to the Simpsons avatar generator.  I’ve been parading my Simpson’s charecter around Moe’s tavern, as if  it wasn’t so much watching a cartoon as making a cartoon.

As for the clip above, I couldn’t help but think “Have the blues ‘done left this town?” until I saw Bender dancing to Louie Armstrong’s cover of “St. Louis Blues”.  If you don’t like it, you can bite my shiny metal ass!

STL Blogerati

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

This is bound to put our fledgling little blog in hot water again.  Thanks to our friends @ 52nd city (with which I’m sure most of our readers are already familiar), we have officially been canonized in the STL blogerati.  It’s a strange invitation recieving press releases for events and venues, because we just like to pass along things we think you might like.  Then I checked the e-mail list, and got in on the joke:

I’m pretty sure every e-mail on this list was or is publicly attainable, but if not I’ll understand if you rather wouldn’t talk to us anymore.  Besides, we already read/watch/listen to every media personality on this e-mail list anyway. We’re just tickled pink to be in your (albiet virtual) company.

Summer (coffee) Break

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

It’s been a few days since we last spoke, but we have a few updates on previous stories for you.  Maybe you don’t need the sense of closure, but forgive us through this penance.  Here’s some links for your coffee break:

We could keep doing this for awhile, but coffee break is just about over for us if you read through all of that.  We’ll see you next Sunday with some more links to freshen your coffee.

Out of Print, but still online?

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

Word is starting to come out that this next month’s Arch City Chronicle will be its last in print.  This might seem a little inside baseball to talk about, since even Dave Drebes links to a KWMU report on the website.  For now though, it looks like the the ACC will be an online-only publication for our St Louis political junkie fixes.

What I can’t help but think about is how the ACC’s own website treats the news:  In a short update on the Other Sources page of the site, Dave links to the KWMU story with the headline “Local Paper Will End”.  Pretty strange to leave such a big announcement with such little fanfare… Perhaps this is a testament of how quickly things are changing in online journalism, in that visitors to the website need not notice this transition.

UPDATE (after the bump below)
