Re:SiStance

March 14th, 2008

Highway 61 stands in solidarity with our fellow Midwest bloggers.  At first we were flattered to be be kept in the good company of so many other talented writers on BlogNetNews, but after repeated attempts of our own to contact the website administrator, we understand the frustration of our comrads.  When it comes to making money by borrowing the work of others without their permission (or reimbursement), “this just ain’t right“.

So what exactly went wrong?  Rebecca has one of the best explanations I’ve read:

“The site is using bloggers to make advertising revenue for itself. The site is taking the content of blogs without their authors’ consent, permission, or even awareness. The site is refusing to acknowledge the many requests by bloggers to have their blogs removed from the site. The site is using people’s registered trademarks against their will. The site is acting under the pretense that it creates community, when all it actually does is use bloggers in order to make a buck for itself. Heads up, Mastio and crew: angry bloggers united make a formidable foe indeed.”

Kids, there’s nothing more cool than being acknowledged by someone you like, but If someone uses your blog in a way or in place that makes you feel uncomfortable, “That’s NO GOOD.” It’s your body (of work), no one has the right to use it unless you want them to.  So what do you do?  First you say “NO!”, then you get out of there.

I think it’s “Say NO, then GO, then TELL SOMEONE”

Right on! Welcome to the struggle!

Virtual high-five, I think a lot of people saw this whole thing the same way when they were first listed and are starting to understand more as time goes by.

Or I could just look at the blogroll and see that you already did…crap. I’m an idiot. Thanks!

Sometimes I forget that actual people read this thing. Then I read comments. BTW, we should combine our statistics to calculate how many readers we’re losing to BlogNetNews.
Thanks for the support everyone. We have your backs on this one.

Ha! I had to laugh when you wrote that I had the best explanation. I’m still relatively new to the bloggy world and feel like the rookie on the end of the bench. Thanks for the shout-out, though, and making me seem more intelligent than I think is true!

So glad you joined us in our blog blitz!

So far, I haven’t been scraped by BNN (knock on wood). This whole thing is purely ridiculous. Create your own damn content, BNN!

  12. Lori Says:

There has to be a more constructive way of dealing with all this than a big ol’ internet “neener neener you can’t have my blog content” sing along.

I know we’re the show me state and hey, that is why Missouri/St. Louis is awesome. But come on, we’re smarter (and kinder) than this, people.

Granted, he’s not making money off of me yet, but meh, if its for the greater good - who cares!

I love this: “It’s your body (of work), no one has the right to use it unless you want them to. So what do you do? First you say “NO!”, then you get out of there.”

    Perfect. Just perfect.

@Lori - I would refer you to Dana’s post about this, if only because she’s doing what some of us are trying to do for living. I’m all about free and fair use, but what I’m not about is people making money off work that I did. That would be the purpose of our day work. More importantly this website owner does a poor job agknowledging and linking to the work he’s citing, which in academia we would consider plagerism.
@Andrea - you like? it’s my little CREDITED satire of the “Sonic Says” linked in the paragaph

  15. Lori Says:

@Matthew Reading it now. From what I’ve heard, the website owner does sound like a total pain. BNN putting all the posts on its sight is seriously the most obnoxious thing ever - all plagiarism aside. May the St. Louis bloggers who’ve been aggregated find a way to benefit from BNN and if not, may BNN get internet-naturally-selected out.
